What Does GSM Mean, and Why Does It Matter for Towels?

GSM is the number on every towel label. Here is what it tells you, and what it does not.
Cotton bolls resting on a plush towel

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It is a measure of how much cotton is packed into a piece of fabric, which makes it a handy shorthand for how dense and heavy a towel is.

What a higher GSM usually means

A higher number generally means a thicker, plusher, more absorbent towel, with that heavy hotel feel. It also means the towel takes a little longer to dry.

What a lower GSM usually means

A lighter towel is quicker to dry, easier to pack and a good fit for warm climates, gyms and travel. It still absorbs well, it simply holds less water at once.

Why GSM is not the whole story

Two towels with the same GSM can feel very different. The quality of the cotton matters just as much. Long-staple fibres are smoother and stronger, which is why combed long-staple cotton stays soft and sheds less lint over time.

Choosing for yourself

If you love a plush, spa-like wrap, look for a heavier towel. If you want something that dries fast between uses, go lighter. Check the product page for the weight of each piece, and look for independent certification such as OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for peace of mind about what is in the fabric.
